Singapore

Garden city of infinite flavours. Compact, spotless and genuinely easy with children, which makes it the least stressful international trip a family can take.

About Singapore

Why go to Singapore

Everything is close, the public transport is excellent, and English is an official language. For a first trip abroad with young children or older parents, nothing else in Asia comes close on convenience.

Three or four nights covers the city properly. It also pairs neatly with Bali or Malaysia if you want a longer trip with a second stop.

The trade-off is cost. Singapore is expensive by regional standards, though hawker centres keep eating remarkably cheap for the quality.

The things worth your time, with the practical detail attached.

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Gardens by the Bay

The Supertree light show at 7.45 and 8.45 each evening is free and better than most paid attractions. The Cloud Forest dome is worth the ticket.

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark, Singapore

The view across the bay at dusk, from the top of the building you have seen in every photograph of the city.

Sentosa and Universal Studios, Singapore

Sentosa and Universal Studios

A full day, and the one children will talk about afterwards. The cable car across is a better arrival than the monorail.

Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, Singapore

Singapore Zoo and Night Safari

Among the best zoos anywhere, built around open enclosures rather than cages. The Night Safari is the genuinely distinctive one.

Hawker centres, Singapore

Hawker centres

Michelin-starred food for a few dollars. Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat and Old Airport Road are the easy starts.

Little India and Chinatown, Singapore

Two neighbourhoods worth a morning each, and a reminder of how layered the city actually is beneath the glass.

Practical info

Visas, flights, weather, money and the local rules that catch people out. If something is not covered, call and ask.

Plan your trip

Singapore requires a visa in advance for Indian passport holders, submitted through an authorised agent rather than directly. We file it for you. Processing typically takes three to five working days and the visa is usually issued for two years, multiple entry.

Changi (SIN) has multiple direct daily flights from Bengaluru on Singapore Airlines, IndiGo and Air India, around four and a half hours. Changi itself is worth arriving early for.

Singapore sits one degree north of the equator, so there is no real season. February to April is marginally drier. Rain when it comes is heavy and brief. Book around the Formula 1 weekend in September if you want lower rates.

One of the safest cities in the world. Tap water is drinkable. Healthcare is excellent. Note that fines are enforced for littering, jaywalking and eating on public transport, and chewing gum import is restricted.

The Singapore Dollar runs around 63 to 65 rupees. Cards and contactless work everywhere including hawker centres now. Very little cash is needed.

Singapore is multicultural and relaxed about dress, though temples and mosques require covered shoulders and knees. Tipping is not expected as service charge is usually included.
