Thailand

Golden temples and turquoise coastlines. The best value in Asia and still the easiest first trip abroad for an Indian family. Direct flights, visa on arrival, and food worth the airfare on its own.

About Thailand

Why go to Thailand

The standard shape is two nights in Bangkok then the islands for as long as you have. That works because the two halves are genuinely different holidays.

Krabi has the best scenery, Phuket the best connections and infrastructure, Koh Samui the quietest beaches. Any of the three can carry a week.

November to March is the dry season and the reason to book early. April and May are hot; the monsoon from June brings short heavy bursts rather than all-day rain, and prices drop sharply.

Things to do

Top experiences in Thailand

The things worth your time, with the practical detail attached.

Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Thailand

Grand Palace and Wat Pho

Bangkok's two essentials, a short walk apart. Go at opening, dress properly, and you can see both in one morning before the heat.

Wat Arun and the river, Thailand

Wat Arun and the river

The Temple of Dawn is best seen from the far bank at sunset. The cross-river ferry costs a few baht and beats any organised tour.

Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

Phi Phi Islands

Maya Bay and the limestone karsts by speedboat from Krabi or Phuket. Go early; by eleven the bay is full.

Phang Nga Bay, Thailand

Phang Nga Bay

James Bond Island and the sea caves by longtail boat, through mangroves and limestone stacks that rise straight out of the water.

Chatuchak Market, Thailand

Chatuchak Market

Fifteen thousand stalls across thirty five acres. Go on a weekend, accept you will get lost, and negotiate.

Thai massage and street food, Thailand

Thai massage and street food

Two things Thailand does better than anywhere else, and both cost very little. The street stalls are where the good eating is.

Practical info

Everything you need to know

Visas, flights, weather, money and the local rules that catch people out. If something is not covered, call and ask.

Plan your trip

Visa on arrival is available to Indian passport holders at major Thai airports for stays up to 15 days. Carry a confirmed return ticket, hotel bookings, a passport photo and the fee in Thai Baht. For longer stays we arrange a tourist visa in advance.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) has direct daily flights from Bengaluru on Thai Airways, IndiGo and Air India, around four hours. Phuket and Krabi are reached on a short domestic connection.

November to March is dry and cooler. December and January are peak. April and May are very hot. June to October brings the monsoon, with short heavy showers and the lowest prices of the year.

Thailand is safe for travellers. Drink bottled water. Be cautious with jet skis and scooter rentals, where damage disputes are a known scam. Hospitals in Bangkok and Phuket are excellent.

The Thai Baht runs around 2.4 rupees. Cards are accepted at hotels and malls, but markets, street food and taxis are cash. ATMs charge a fixed foreign card fee, so withdraw larger amounts less often.

Never touch anyone's head or point your feet at a person or a Buddha image. The royal family is protected by strict law, so avoid any disrespectful comment. Temples require covered shoulders and knees.
